These pictures are of the Baron Bliss Regatta, sailed in March each year in honour of the Baron, who died on his motor yacht, anchored off Belize Harbour in 1926, and left all his fortune to the people of Belize who had treated him so well in his last few days. The sailboats in the pictures were all, until very recently, employed in the sand and gravel business carrying up to 8 tons of sand daily from the sand banks in river mouths to the city. As you can see, the sails and gear, are very "experienced," even showing the insignia of their previous lives, and have been well and thoroughly patched and adapted. The lighters still carry sand, these days in bags, while racing, and just like the Volvo racers the crewmen stack them on the windward side after each tack. They also indulge in classic "weight on the windward side", legs out, hiking. The blue boat, "Radio," the eventual winner of this years event is over one hundred and thirty years old, still carries sand, and her helmsman, Egbert Flowers is getting on as well. These photos are from the Harken Youth Challenge on San Francisco Bay the largest Opti regatta on the west coast with 50 boats on the starting line. Photos by Leslie Richter/ Rockskipper Photography

The event, hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club April 18-19, brought together 55 teams from every Interclub fleet in the United States. Eight races were held in a puffy, shifty westerly on Saturday with gusts to 18 knots, with a light, lumpy easterly allowing for 6 more races on Sunday.
