The 2008 IRC East Coast Championship title was up for grabs this past weekend in Annapolis, Md, with the three-day regatta, run by the Storm Trysail Club’s Chesapeake Station, consisting of a 29.64nm distance race on Friday and five windward/leeward races on Saturday and Sunday. In the end, Mayhem (above), the TP52 owned by Ashley Wolfe (Calgary, CAN), won IRC Class 1 and was crowned the overall 2008 champion among the 35 competing boats. -- Full report

A gigantic sailboat bearing huge heads of John McCain and Barack Obama on the mainsail drifted past the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last weekend, treating thousands of visitors to a massive floating electoral mural as they walked the docks. Maybe Obama won the election because he was on starboard! -- Full report

What a coincidence that this week the Spanish club CNEV decided to host their annual regatta at the same time as the Scuttlebutt Sailing Club annual regatta. Here is a photo by John Paine of the fleet competing at the Musto Scuttlebutt Sailing Club Championship Regatta, which is held in conjunction with the Bitter End YC’s Pro Am Regatta in the BVI. -- Full report

Last Saturday, Sean Milner (skipper and builder) and Dan Leech (crew and naval architect) of Christchurch, NZ, took Milner's 12' 9" R Class skiff to new heights during the second test sail of their hydrofoil development program in Lyttelton Harbour. They're still working the bugs out of the project and the learning curve is steep, but Saturday's successful lift-off was a big leap forward for the R Class, an iconic Kiwi skiff fleet with a 60-year history of pushing the limits of dinghy sailing. From the 505 Europeans and Worlds just held in Sicily, with skipper Ethan Bixby fixing a knot in the pole launcher line while crew Erik Boothe steers from the wire. The team won the European Championship with a 1,1,1,2,2 (12) score.

The team at VESTAS SAILROCKET have been working flat out down in Walvis Bay, Namibia to try and unleash the potential of their unique speed sailing craft. The effort began to pay off last weekend when VESTAS SAILROCKET averaged 44.29 knots over a linear 500m course and peaked at around 46 knots in 22 knots of wind (average). -- See video
